Some interesting observations. I would suggest that we have outgrown our two party system of govenance. The world is far too complicated to filter things down two one or two "camps". There needs to be new and viable alternative groups (parties) so there can be honest debate. I would suggest that the founding fathers never envisoned professional politicans. The notion of giving of your time was more a noble civiv responsibility, not a vocation. I belive, until our electted represenattaives are "unburdened" with the need to run for re-election; they can concentrate and debate the real and most imprtant issues that we face rather than worrying about losing special interest constituencies, whether they be Intelligent Design advocates or Unions. Senate: one six yeara term and one; Representative: one four year term and done. President: one six year term and done. Fous on the real issues and let the real debate take place. My two cents.

Interesting read. Thanks for posting.

I disagree with the concept of the government supporting marriage for gays because religion belief is mostly faith based and have no proof whether our maker exists or DOES NOT exist. Even if I support civil union, the government does not have the right to support marriages regardless of what religion the marriage is based on. If Orson Scott Card ever take up arms about government, I would believe he would be within his right to do so ONLY if the government supports gay marriage in his religion, Mormon religion, I believe. If the government wants to avoid another Waco, the government would have to stay middle of the road by only supporting civil union. If there will be any violent overthrow, I would be verbally supportive of Orson Scott Card's action but won't be shooting at anyone because religion belief is not worth killing.

This is quite disturbing. It makes me wonder what's going on in his personal life that would motivate him to murder over something like gay marriage. Perhaps he's a closeted gay man who can't deal with those feelings, or he was molested as a child and thinks all gay people are evil molesters. That kind of violent hatred comes from a deeply personal place.

I know many people who think gay marriage should not be legal, but very few would be driven to murder over the issue. It's a shame he is such a whackaloon.

If his kind takes up arms and tries to overthrow the government, (or starts shooting up gay bars and other *liberal* places), I too will be there... standing between them and their intended targets.

I like how you wrote, "In last place I’d put Robert Louis Stevenson’s Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." Had somebody only read that line, it would have sounded like you did not like this work. Considering the two stories it was put up against, I would say it did quite well.

I have read far too little of the classics. I think I'll get my self a copy of these. Too many books to read, not enough time to read them.

Too bad your blog isn't transferable to LiveJournal. I could add you as a friend and read your blog each time you post without having to jump sites. I could also intro you to a bunch of other established author types in spec fiction.

[...] The book is historical fiction, but the main historical points are not altered for the sake of the story. It’s a wonderful book that deserves to be read as it tackles the idea of censorship, which is quite prevalent today. The author recently blogged about this, which you can find here.
